An 11-year-old girl, set on fire four days ago by a man who tried to rape her, succumbed to her injuries at a hospital here Sunday. The accused was sent to police custody for 10 days by a court.
"The minor was admitted with critical burns. Today (Sunday) morning, she succumbed to her injuries," said SSKM Hospital Superintendent T.K. Ghosh.
Accused Kundan tried to rape the girl Wednesday night in Salkia in Howrah district when she went out of her house to relieve herself. When she resisted and threatened to reveal his identity, he poured kerosene over her and set her on fire.
She was later admitted to hospital with serious burns.
"Kundan who was arrested last night (Saturday) was Sunday remanded to 10 days police custody by a court," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Howrah) Rashid Munir Khan said.

Meanwhile, the family of the girl has demanded death penalty for the accused.
"Unless the accused is given death penalty, such crimes will continue to happen. Only imprisonment will embolden him and when he comes out of jail he will feel he can get away doing any crime," said the father of the victim.
"If the government cannot give him death penalty, then it should hand him over to us so that we set him on fire in the same way as he did to our daughter," said the mother.
