Even as police are yet to make any headway in the lynching of an alleged thief at the NRS Medical College and Hospital, the family of the victim who has now been identified has demanded exemplary punishment for the killers.

The body of 28-year-old Korpan Sha was recovered from the boys hostel of NRS Sunday. He was found tied to a pillar and beaten to death with bamboo sticks allegedly by a group of junior doctors and students. The attackers even allegedly inflicted injuries on his genitals.

According to the family which Tuesday identified the body, Korpan was a resident of Uluberia in neighbouring Howrah district and was suffering from depression following an accident and loss of his mother.

Korpan has left behind his wife and four children.

"He was not a thief, rather he was falsely charged and killed. How am I supposed to feed my four children? Even if mentally unstable, he was their father. I want exemplary punishment for all who killed him mercilessly," said his wife, Arijina Begum.

Korpan's brother Morsalim Sha, who identified the body, also demanded punishment for the killers.

While police have initiated a probe into the matter, they are yet to make any arrest.
