A woman in West Bengal's Malda district allegedly injured her four-year-old daughter while under the influence of alcohol, police said on Friday but termed "incorrect" and "exaggerated" the reports about her allegedly eating the baby's flesh.
The 42-year-old mother, a resident of Gopalpur village in the district, had cut off tufts of the baby's hair and injured her on the scalp.
"She injured the baby in a drunken condition. A police complaint has been lodged and she has been produced in court," said Dilip Karmakar, inspector-in-charge of English Bazar police station.
The baby has been admitted to the Malda Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) and her condition is "stable", said M. A. Rashid, hospital vice principal-cum-superintending officer.
Police said arrangements are being made for rehabilitation of the woman.
