A leading Bengal university Tuesday suspended five students for a year for their involvement in ragging.

The students of Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU), Shibpur in neighbouring Howrah district, are barred from participating in any academic activities or availing hostel facilities.

The university will also sever all connections with the students for a year, said its Vice Chancellor Ajoy Kumar Ray.

If the students desire to rejoin the university after a year, they will have to furnish a written undertaking that they would not get involved in any such incidents.

Another student has been barred from staying in the hostel, though he would be allowed to continue the academic activities, Ray said.

As part of the punitive measures, none of the six would be considered for any awards for their academic performance.

The university cracked the whip following a complaint from a first year student that the six had ragged him in a university hostel last week.
