A 40-year-old woman was shot dead outside a doctor's clinic by an unidentified person in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, police said here on Sunday.
"Sajeda Khatoon, a resident of North 24 Parganas district's Titagarh was shot at twice on Saturday evening while she was waiting outside a doctor's chamber," an officer from Titagarh police station said.
"According to the eye witnesses, the first bullet missed the target but the second bullet hit Khatoon right on her face causing her to collapse on the floor," he said.
Local people took Khatoon to a nearby hospital, where she was declared brought dead.
Police said they still do not have any leads to ascertain why the middle aged woman was murdered. Relatives and neighbours of the deceased will be interrogated to find out if the family had enmity with anyone.
"We have found out that Khatoon and her husband used to run a clothing business. We are probing the case. The body has been sent for autopsy," the officer added.
