A city college student has been arrested for allegedly running a social media page that regularly posted obscene memes about celebrities and statesmen, police said.
"Manimoy Aich, a third-year student of a south Kolkata college, was arrested on Tuesday night for maintaining a Facebook page named 'Specified Tarkata' that uploaded several obscene and vulgar memes about celebrities and statesmen," Kolkata Police said on its Facebook page.
"The youth from West Bengal's Midnapore district was arrested from a mess in south Kolkata's Garia. His cell phone and pen drive have been seized," the post said.
The alleged Facebook page faced widespread criticism from the users after it posted a vulgar meme of Indian freedom struggle hero Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose a few days ago. There were also distasteful troll messages and memes on Nobel awardee Rabindranath Tagore and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the page.
An online petition was started by some users for a ban on the page for posting objectionable contents at regular intervals.
Police said they received numerous complaints about the page and used their cyber cell to locate Aich, who was the page's administrator.
