Berti Vogts, head coach of the Azerbaijan national football team, has resigned four days after a 0-6 defeat to Croatia in the 2016 European Championship qualifier, the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA) said.

Vogts had been in charge since 2008, and Friday left Azerbaijan at the bottom of Group H after three consecutive losses in the qualifiers, reports Xinhua.

The German failed to guide the side to qualification for any of the three major tournaments since his appointment, falling well short on each occasion.

It was announced Friday that Vogts would not longer continue in his position.

"AFFA President Rovnag Abdullayev met Azerbaijan national team coach Berti Vogts in Zurich, Switzerland," AFFA said in a statement.

"Berti Vogts thanked AFFA for their work and noted that he considers Azerbaijan his second home. AFFA President Rovnag Abdullayev said that Vogts was requested to continue his work but the German noted with regret that he couldn't see his future in the Azerbaijan national team."

Vogts won the World Cup as a player with West Germany in 1974, and managed Germany to victory in Euro 1996.
