Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav Monday said E.Sreedharan - the man behind Delhi Metro - should be bestowed with Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.

At a foundation-stone laying programme here for the north-south corridor of the metro rail project, he said it was only befitting that Bharat Ratna is bestowed on Sreedharan.

Mulayam Singh said he would write to the prime minister in this regard very soon.

Sreedharan, was recently appointed advisor to the Lucknow Metro project, addressed the gathering via video conference from his village in Kerala.

He said Uttar Pradesh has taken a right and encouraging decision to take up the metro project in Lucknow and assured that the project would be completed in time.

After laying the foundation stone, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said that once the metro starts running, the face of the city will change forever.

He said one of the priorities of his state government was to create a strong infrastructure.

The first phase of the metro is likely to be completed by 2017, officials said.
