The ruling BJP and RSS-backed lawyers' panel on Monday won the Tripura Bar Council (TBC) election, securing nine seats in the 15-member Council, an official said.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-backed lawyers won four seats while outgoing Council Chairman and Congress nominee Pijush Kanti Biswas and Independent candidate Purosattam Roy Barman were re-elected.

Voting for the bar council election took place on February 28.

Altogether 19 lawyers contested the election and 853 of 1,000 members of the lawyers' body voted to form the new executive panel of the TBC, which has a three-year term.

Congratulating the newly-elected pro-BJP members, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said: "One more step has been taken towards achieving a 'communist-mukt' Tripura."

The outgoing Council was governed by a panel backed by the Congress and the CPI-M.
