The BJP Sunday backed the Supreme Court's recent judgment reinstating Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code that criminalises homosexuality.

Though Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh was quoted by a newspaper as saying that homosexuality was "unnatural", he refused to make any comment when asked about his remarks later.

"We usually honour Supreme Court judgments. How can anyone justify unnatural acts?" Rajnath Singh was quoted as saying.

Later, BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said homosexuality was against Indian culture.

"What Rajnath ji said is right. It is against our cultural heritage, we cannot imitate the west," he said.

The Supreme Court Dec 11 set aside the Delhi High Court verdict of 2009, which had decriminalised sexual relationship between adults of the same gender.

Gay activists have protested the Supreme Court verdict that said consensual sex between adults of the same gender was an offence, as held in Section 377 of the IPC.
