Accusing the previous Congress-led UPA government at the Centre of involvement in scams totalling Rs 12 lakh crore, BJP President Amit Shah appealed to the people to ensure that BJP governments were installed across the country.

"It is time the BJP come to power from panchayats upwards up to Parliament. Punjab is the appropriate state to make a start in this direction," Shah said at a rally here to launch the Bharatiya Janata Party's poll campaign for the 2017 Punjab assembly elections.

As for the ruling BJP-Shiromani Akali Dal alliance in Punjab, Shah said "the alliance is not an ordinary coalition but a symbol of secularism".

Reacting to Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi's question on the Narendra Modi government's achievements, Shah said: "The present NDA government has given a corruption-free government compared with the earlier UPA government that is notorious for Rs 12 lakh crore scams."

He said the opposition parties and leaders were rattled by the September 28-29 surgical strikes on the country's enemies across the Line of Control as well as the November 8 demonetisation to expose black money.

The SAD-BJP government is in power in Punjab since 2007.
