In the wake of the controversy over Tipu Sultan's birth anniversary celebration in Karnataka, the BJP on Thursday demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for his alleged failure to control law and order.

"The Karnataka chief minister should resign as he is not able to manage law and order in the state," Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Sambit Patra said.

"What's happening in Karnataka is shocking. The law and order situation has collapsed. The chief minister should answer this," he added.

The BJP leader also asked Congress president Sonia Gandhi if she would now hold a protest march in Karnataka.

"The state government has failed and people have now begun receiving death threats and are losing their lives. In such a scenario, will Sonia Gandhi go to Karnataka and protest against this or hold a march there with Congressmen?" Patra told reporters.

Activists of the BJP and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Wednesday burnt Siddaramaiah's effigies and blocked the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway in Srirangapatnam.

Several Hindu organisations have protested against the celebration of Tipu Sultan's 265th birth anniversary by the Congress government in Karnataka.

In protest, the VHP has called for a state-wide bandh on Friday.
