A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) parliamentarian on Wednesday sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention to speed up the process of providing compensation and death certificates to the kin of the victims of 2013 Uttarakhand flash floods.

BJP MP from Buxar, Bihar -- Ashwini Kumar Chaubey, who was stranded with his family when the flash floods hit the state two years ago, urged Modi to direct the state government to end the sufferings of the victims' families.

"Due to the lackadaisical attitude of the Uttarakhand government, several families have still not received either monetary compensation or death certificates of their loved ones," Chaubey said.

He was speaking at a prayer meeting organised by Akhil Bhartiya Uttarakhand Trasadi Peedit Manch for paying tributes to the victims of the Uttarakhand flash floods on its second anniversary.

"I would urge the prime minister to intervene and direct the state government to ensure that the families are not denied their rights," he added.

Uttrakhand was ravaged by floods caused by a cloudburst in 2013 that left thousands of dead people and created widespread devastation.
