Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Tuesday accused the BJP of paying only lip service to what she called the poor law and order situation in the state.

If the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is serious about the issue, it was time Governor Ram Naik, himself a BJP leader, acted on the issue, she said.

Mayawati also urged the Governor to act as the custodian of the Indian Constitution.

Referring to BJP President Amit Shah's attack on the Samajwadi Party (SP) government on the law and order front on Monday, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief said both the BJP and the SP were responsible for what she termed the "pathetic" law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh.

Taking a dig at the SP over its merger with mafia don Muktar Ansari's Qaumi Ekta Dal and the later reversal of the decision, the Dalit leader said if all goons in the state were to be sent to jail, the Samajwadi Party will be left with no leaders.

The BSP has been demanding for long the dismissal of the Akhilesh Yadav government and imposition of President's Rule due to the poor law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh.

Mayawati also sought to clarify that except for Swami Prasad Maurya, no other BSP leader had left the party and rumours in this regard were baseless.
