The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded stringent punitive action against Uttar Pradesh director general of police (DGP) Anand Lal Banerjee for his remarks on rapes and rapists.

State BJP president Laxmikant Bajpayi Saturday said the statement of Banerjee in Kanpur Friday was not only "insensitive and in bad taste", but also one which had the potential of encouraging rapists.

Banerjee in an interaction with the media had said no body comitts rape after another thereby implying that rape is a one-time crime. The top cop also said that there were fair chances that after committing one rape, the offender repents and does not indulge in any more crimes further.

Reacting to this, Bajpayi said it did not behove of someone as senior as the state DGP to say something like this.

"UP reports many crimes against women every day and rapes are taking place in large numbers. In such a grim situation any irresponsible statement only adds to the problems," he said while calling for immediate action against Banerjee by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

"In case no action is taken soon, should we imply that the state government's views on the matter are in sync with the DGP's," asked Bajpayi.
