The BJP is spending more time criticising the Congress than in governing the country, Congress MP Bhalchandra Mungekar said on Tuesday as the Rajya Sabha took up the debate on the general budget.

Mungekar said it is being propagated that Congress rule was the darkest period for India, adding that even former prime minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veteran Atal Bihari Vajpayee never took this line.

"BJP government is wasting more time in criticising Congress than governing this country. I request the BJP government to get rid of this hatred for Congress party. Let us treat each other as respectable political opponents," Mungekar said.

"Congress fortunately for this country is so deeply rooted... that one unfavourable election result of 2014 cannot uproot the Congress," he said.

The Congress MP, who specialises in agricultural economics, also said that dismantling the Planning Commission was a wrong decision.

"Immediately after coming to power the BJP government has made a blunder by abolishing the Planning Commission," he said.

The Planning Commission, or Yojana Aayog was replaced by Niti Aayog after the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government came to power in 2014.
