The BJP Thursday said it welcomed the Supreme Court verdict that politicians convicted in criminal cases would cease to be elected representatives but added that it will give its full response after studying the judgment.
Party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar told reporters here that criminalisation of politics was "cancer of electoral system".
"After studying, we will give full response. Already we welcome it," he said.
He said the party welcomed any step aimed at purification of the electoral system.
The Supreme Court Wednesday declared as unconstitutional the provision of the Representation of the People Act that allowed elected representatives to continue as members of the elected bodies even after conviction in criminal cases.
