At least seven people were killed and 17 others injured in a powerful blast Friday in the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi.

According to a News International report, the blast targeted an Imambargah in the Chitian Hatian area of the city and the attacker blew himself up after his attempt to enter the place of worship was foiled.

Eyewitnesses said the explosion that took place outside the Imambargah was so intense that windowpanes of nearby buildings were shattered.

The injured were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital, and some of them were in critical condition.
