German football club Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Andre Hahn will be sidelined for the rest of 2015 after suffering a severe knee injury following a foul play by Schalke's Johannes Geis.

Monchengladbach secured their fifth straight win with the 3-1 win over Schalke on Monday. However, the "Foals" victory was overshadowed by the late foul play of Schalke's Geis, who saw a straight red card after injuring Hahn's left knee with a tackle in the 80th minute, reports Xinhua.

After receiving medical treatment on the pitch, Hahn had to be carted off and taken to hospital, where a fracture of the tibial plateau and a tear of the lateral meniscus were diagnosed.

The 25-year-old successfully underwent a surgery on Monday. According to the club, Hahn will be sidelined "at least for the rest of the first half of the campaign".

Andre Hahn joined Monchengladbach in March 2014 and scored five goals in 30 appearances to date.

Due to the rude foul and resulting injury, the German Football Association (DFB) penalised Schalke's Geis with a five-game ban in all competitions.
