Botafogo were relegated to the second division of the Brazilian league after the Rio de Janeiro sides lost to Santos 0-2.
Former Brazil striker Leandro Damiao scored twice in the second half to give Santos the win Sunday, reports Xinhua.
It is only the second time that Botafogo have been demoted in their 110-year history. The two-time Brazilian champions last played in the second division in 2003.
With one round left, Botafogo are second-to-last in the 20-team standings with 33 points. They are six points behind Palmeiras. The bottom four clubs are demoted.
