An eight-year-old boy shot dead his elder brother with their father's hunting gun in Mizoram, police said here Tuesday.

The incident took place late Monday in Serchhip district.

"R.C. Lalchuangkima returned from the forest, and kept his loaded hunting gun in his home Monday night. His young son reportedly picked up the gun and fired at his elder brother David Lalengzuala, who died on the spot," a police officer said.

The boy, only eight years old, fired twice and the bullets hit his 12-year-old elder brother in the head, said the officer.

Police are trying to ascertain the sequence of events leading to the firing incident.
