Brazilian swimmer Sarah Correa, a silver medallist at the 2011 Pan American Games, has died after being hit by a car while waiting at a bus stop here.

The 22-year-old was declared brain dead after being taken unconscious to Miguel Couto hospital, according to a Facebook post on Saturday by her mother, Maria Fatima Alves Goncalves, reports Xinhua.

Another pedestrian, 58-year-old Paulo Soares, was also struck by the vehicle and died before paramedics arrived.

The driver is understood to have fled the scene before turning himself in to police.

In another Facebook post, Maria Fatima said her daughter has been "murdered".

"I want justice and I won't rest until that happens," she wrote.

Correa was part of Brazil's 4x200 metres freestyle relay team that took silver at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

She retired from swimming in October last year to focus on a burgeoning modelling career.
