Thousands of people across Brazilians cities have protested for justice for Councillor Marielle Franco who was murdered last week in Rio de Janeiro.

The protestors on Tuesday paid tribute to Franco, an avid critic of the Brazilian Army's intervention in Rio's security matters and an active human rights defender, Efe news reported.

A rising star in Brazilian politics, Franco had denounced police violence just one day before she was murdered along with her driver Anderson Gomes on March 14.

Around 30,000 people, gathered in the centre of Rio, where Anielle Silva, Franco's sister, said that she "bears a grudge" against her sister's death. The protests are named "Who killed Marielle?"

"I'm not going to rest until this is resolved. I'm a teacher. I have no political experience, but I've always fought for human rights, as my sister had," Silva said in an emotional tribute to the Councilor and activist.

She also denied, that Franco was affiliated with the Socialism and Freedom Party (PSOL), or involved with "bandits," after a judge published on social networks that the slain lawmaker might have been associated with criminal factions and had been married to a drug trafficker.

"Marielle was never a bandit. We were never financed by the drug traffickers and she never married a bandit. (They) will not be able to destroy everything my sister built," Silva said.

The Brazilian National Justice Council complied with a PSOL complaint and has opened an investigation on the judge's conduct.

Franco was murdered in her car that Gomes was driving. They were chased and shot at. At least nine shots were fired.
