Republican likely presidential nominee Donald Trump said that Brexit -- Britain's exit from the European Union (EU) -- would not have an impact on trade between the US and Britain if he was in the White House.

Trump on Sunday said in an interview that he had "big investments" in Britain but added that he had "no preference" on the outcome of the June 23 referendum on Britain's future in or outside of the EU, Politico reported.

He added that he intends to "treat everybody fairly, but it wouldn't make any difference to me whether they were in the EU or not".

"I think if I were from Britain, I would probably not want it. I'd want to go back to a different system," he said.

"Britain's such a great ally that they went into things that they shouldn't have gone into -- like, as an example, going into Iraq. With me, they'll always been treated fantastically," he added.
