A British national has been kidnapped after he landed at the Lagos International Airport in Nigeria, the British mission in the country said Friday.

Gunmen targeted a car Tuesday evening after it left the airport's international terminal and seized the Briton, who was returning to a residential area of Lagos, Sky News reported.

The Nigerian driver of the vehicle was shot but survived.

In a statement, the British High Commission said it was working closely to secure the release of the hostage.

There are several companies with British connections operating in Nigeria, but it was not known where the kidnapped man was employed.
