In a successful exercise designed to avoid juducial delays, BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd, one of the three power distribution companies (discoms) of the capital, settled over 2,000 power theft cases with a value of over Rs 20 crore through a special Lok Adalat, the discom announced on Monday.

"The special Lok Adalat organised by BSES Rajdhani Power Limited in association with Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA) over the weekend settled over 2,000 power theft cases with a value of over Rs 20 crore," the discom said in a release here.

The Lok Adalat, to settle power theft cases in south and west Delhi, was held on December 10 and 11 at the premises of the District Court in Saket.

"The Lok Adalat settled 2,135 power theft cases with a value of over Rs 20 crore," it said.

The two-day paperless process "also managed to save over 30,000 A4 size sheets," it added.

BSES described it as a "win-win" for all stakeholders alike, offering the opportunity for an amicable and on-the-spot settlement of cases relating to direct theft and meter tampering.

"For the consumers, it meant an opportunity to amicably settle their cases and an escape from a prolonged and expensive legal process. For judiciary, it meant some burden off their Courts and it also meant more people coming into our billing net," a BSES spokesperson said.

Prior to this, BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd and the DLSA have organised special Lok Adalats on six occasions and settled around 10,000 cases involving a total amount of over Rs 60 crore.
