BWF president Høyer elected to IOC

Badminton World Federation (BWF) president Poul-Erik Høyer was elected to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) here Friday.

The 48-year-old Dane was the sole nominee for membership at IOC's 126th Session ahead of the Winter Olympics which officially started Friday.

Høyer received 76 votes out of 88 valid ballots, easily surpassing the required majority of 45 votes. There was a total of 91 ballots overall. He was then invited to take the oath of office after which he was welcomed by IOC president Thomas Bach and other IOC Executive Board members, said a BWF release.

Høyer, the 1996 Atlanta Olympics men's singles gold medallist, has been the BWF president since May 2013.
