Continuing the endeavour in doing away with old and archaic laws, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved repealing of 105 laws.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-chaired cabinet approved introduction of the Repealing and Amending Bill, 2017 to repeal 105 Acts.

Informing the decision, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that 1,175 such laws have been repealed between May 2014 and August 2016.

The government has identified 1,824 "redundant and obsolete" Central Acts for repealing.

Prasad also said that state governments have been requested to repeal 227 Acts that have been identified to be repealed by respective state governments.

According to the Law Ministry, a list of the redundant laws was circulated among all the ministries and departments for their comments.

Seventy three ministries or departments including Legislative Department have agreed to repeal 105 Acts, while disagreeing to repeal about 139 Acts, it said.
