Cuneyt Cakir will be the first Turkish referee in 40 years to officiate at the World Cup, a media report said.

The FIFA Referees Committee, under the chairmanship of Jim Boyce of Northern Ireland, Tuesday appointed 25 referee trios and eight support duos representing 43 different countries and regions for football's biggest event, the World Cup in Brazil, Xinhua reported Wednesday citing a Daily News report.

Cakir is among the referees that were assigned to FIFA's flagship event, which starts June 12, according the decision of the FIFA Referees Committee.

Cakir will be the first Turkish referee after pioneer Dogan Bababan to be assigned to officiate at a World Cup.
