At least 168 people died in Mekong river flash floods in Cambodia, an official said Tuesday.

"...more than 1.7 million people have been affected," Keo Vy, spokesman for the National Committee for Disaster Management told Xinhua.

The flood destroyed property worth $500 million, he added.

He said about 300,500 hectares of paddy, and some 240 km of national roads have been damaged.

"So far, floodwaters have receded in most provinces. Hopefully, life will return to normal in the next few weeks," he said.

Most of the country's provinces have faced flooding since mid-September.

It killed 250 people and destroyed property worth $521 million in 2011.
