A case of death by negligence was initiated against the owner of tannery in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district where three workers died after inhaling poisonous gas a day earlier, police said.

Three workers were killed and two others taken ill after they were exposed to toxic gas while cleaning a drainage line at Labbaik International tannery in the Calcutta Leather Complex at Bantala in the district.

"On the basis of a complaint by a victim's family, we have registered a case against owner of the unit, Parvez Alam on charges of causing death by negligence and causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others under the Indian Penal Code," said a police officer.

"We have sought opinion of forensic experts as well as the state pollution control board and if negligence is proved, then the accused will be arrested," added the officer.
