Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday arrested a divisional engineer in Murshidabad district of West Bengal for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs one lakh from a railway contractor.
The accused, Ram Swarup, was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe.
"CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs one lakh from the complainant," CBI spokesperson said.
"A case was registered on a complaint alleging that the divisional engineer was harassing the complainant and was not entering the measurement of work completed by him as a result of which payment towards the work already carried out by him was not being processed," CBI said.
The investigating agency said the accused person demanded a bribe of Rs 2.80 lakh for passing the pending bills of complainant and agreed to accept a sum of Rs one lakh.
