The CBI on Tuesday said it has arrested an Income Tax Officer on charge of accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000 for dropping penal proceedings against an Odisha businessman.

"Niranjan Behera was arrested yesterday (Monday) while demanding and accepting Rs 40,000 from the complainant for dropping penal proceedings against him and not reopening the tax assessment of previous years," an agency official told IANS.

A case was registered against Behera on February 9 on the complaint of Gaurahari Nayak, who owns Maa Jyotiramayee Filling Station in Odisha's Bhadrak.

The agency seized Rs 2 lakh in cash and property documents during searches at the office and residence of Behera.
