The parliamentary standing committee on Tribal Affairs, in its latest report, recommended that the overall supervision and management of Eklavya Schools should be centralised on the pattern of Kendriya Vidyalayas to improve their quality.

Noting that out of 247 Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRs), 161 schools have been set up in the states on the pattern of Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalayas, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and Kendriya Vidyalayas, the committee said, "some of these schools are not running smoothly and have a poor infrastructure besides lack of quality teachers".

The panel said that the schools were set up to not only enable the Scheduled Tribes (ST) to avail reservation in high and professional education courses and get jobs in government and private sectors but also to let them have access to the best opportunities in education at par with the non-ST population.

"When full grant is provided to the state governments by the centre for these schools, their overall supervision and management should be centralised on the pattern of Kendriya Vidyalayas," it said, stressing that this would bring about a quality change in these EMRs and benefit their students.
