Centre grants Rs 160 cr to UP for urban housing

The Centre has granted Rs 160 crore to Uttar Pradesh to construct houses for its urban poor, an official statement said on Wednesday.

The UP government had proposed to construct 11,286 houses for the urban poor living in its 34 towns.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (HUPA) approved it on Tuesday, the statement here said.

"Total investment involved in construction of these houses is Rs 384 crore, the Ministry has approved central assistance of Rs 160 crore in this regard," it added.

The Akhilesh Yadav government proposed construction of these houses under the beneficiary led construction component of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Housing for All (Urban).

 

Under this scheme, eligible beneficiaries are given central assistance of Rs 1.50 lakh each, for construction of new houses on their land or for improvement of existing houses.

The scheme - PMAY (Urban) was launched in June 2015.

Some of the towns of Uttar Pradesh where construction of new houses was sanctioned are Barwar, Iltifatganj, Maholi, Ranipur, Pali, Suriyawan, Chughuli and Sikandra among others.

Three towns where improvement of existing houses was approved are Maghar, Ghuguhuli and Shohratgarh.

The Centre has also approved construction of 41,033 houses for the urban poor under the PMAY (Urban) in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Nagaland, Puducherry and Daman.

It involves an investment of Rs 2,946 crore and central assistance of Rs 778 crore, the statement added.

Out of the total 41,033 houses, Madhya Pradesh gets 25,097 houses, Chhattisgarh - 8,941, Maharashtra-3,805, Nagaland-2,422, Puducherry-720 and Daman-48 houses.

With this, HUPA has so far approved construction of 13,43,805 houses for the urban poor under PMAY (Urban) involving an investment of Rs.72,781 crore and central assistance of Rs.19,633 crore, it said.
