The Modi government should apologise for making false promises and betraying the public, Congress leader Anand Sharma said here on Friday.

"After Independence, the Modi regime has been most painful for the country and its people because of its wrong decisions, mainly demonetization and GST," the former Union Minister said.

Sharma accused the government of monumental mismanagement of the banking system and weakening important institutions like the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Enforcement Directorate, the Election Commission and the RBI.

"The credibility of the Reserve Bank of India has dropped after demonetisation as the bank did not put forth the right perspective before the government," Sharma, who is the party's Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha, told reporters.

He said the Modi government would celebrate four years of its rule with massive propaganda, spending crores of rupees again to misguide people. "The government should instead repent on this day," he added.

Demonetisation, as per the government, was done to end corruption, black money and to check funding for terrorism.

"The results are opposite. Corruption has increased. The entire nation stood in lines outside ATM machines. A total of 143 people lost their lives due to this. But the Modi government has never felt sorry for this," he said.
