The central government will review the public private partnership (PPP) component involved in setting up of model schools, Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani said here Wednesday.

"The government proposes to undertake a review of the PPP component of the model school scheme for setting up of schools in 3203 non-educationally backward blocks" across the country, she said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

The scheme was launched in November 2008 and was being implemented from 2009-10.

The scheme envisages setting up of 6,000 model schools - one in every block of the country as benchmark of excellence for providing quality education to talented children.

A total of 614 proposals were received by the government from private entities under the PPP component of the scheme, out of which 192 were accepted, Irani said.

The scheme has two modes of implementation. Firstly, 3,500 model schools are to be set up in educationally backward blocks through state governments.

Secondly, the remaining 2,500 model schools are to be set up under PPP mode in blocks, which are not educationally backward.
