Chelsea wrapped up their UEFA Champions League group stage by beating Sporting Lisbon 3-1 at home here.

Cesc Fabregas put Chelsea ahead in the eighth minute with a penalty after Filipe Luis was fouled by Ricardo Esgaio inside the box Wednesday night, reports Xinhua.

German international Andre Schurrle made it 2-0 eight minutes later with a low right-foot strike.

Jonathan Silva pulled one goal back for Sporting in the 50th minute before John Mikel Obi sealed the victory for the home side with a tap-in from a Fabregas free-kick.

Chelsea, who had already secured the top spot in Group G, advanced into the last 16 along with Schalke 4.

Sporting missed out on a place in the knockout stage by a point after Schalke won 1-0 away at Slovenian side Maribor.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said after the match: "We were very focused and serious. I'm happy with that. I feel sorry for Sporting, I would have liked them to qualify."
