A car bomb went off in a pro-government district of Syria's central city of Homs on Friday, killing a child and injuring nine people, media reported.

The booby-trapped car exploded at the predominantly Christian neighbourhood of Araman in Homs, Xinhua news agency reported citing Syria's national TV, but spelling no further details.

The same district has repeatedly been hit by car bombs, which had killed many people and destroyed property during the country' s long-running conflict.

The explosion came amid ongoing clashes between the Syrian government forces and extremist militants in the eastern countryside of Homs.

A day earlier, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 17 Syrian soldiers were killed when the Islamic State (IS) militants attacked two checkpoints in eastern Homs.
