Claiming Huangyan island as its "inherent territory", China Thursday urged the Philippines to stop creating trouble over the island.
It also asked Manila to create conditions that could lead to a code of conduct in South China Sea, Global Times quoted a foreign ministry spokesperson as saying.
Spokesperson Hong Lei was responding to Philippine foreign affairs secretary Albert del Rosario.
Rosario said the Philippines had discovered concrete blocks on the island and that China had tried to expand territory, placing the region's peace and stability in jeopardy.
China has rejected accusations that it was fortifying Huangyan island.
