Chinese automaker Chery will open a new plant in Brazil this year, company officials said Sunday.

Chery Auto started building the plant in 2011 in Jacarei city in Sao Paulo with an investment of 2.45 billion yuan (around $400 million), Xinhua reported.

Chery Auto set foot in Brazil in 2009 and has introduced several models including QQ, Cielo and Tiggo, which won the country's title of "SUV of the year" in 2010.

In July, police in Sao Paulo started using Celer models, the first time that Chery cars have been used for public service. Chery has 80 dealers in the South American country.
