A major rail accident was averted on Thursday after loco pilots managed to stop two suburban trains that had come on the same track, an official said.
The incident happened in Dum Dum station under Sealdah section of the Eastern Railway.
"Due to signalling failure, the two trains had come on the same but the loco pilots managed to stop the trains," said a railways official.
With train movement disrupted due to the incident and hundreds of commuters left stranded, people staged demonstrations with few of them pelting stones at the trains and station premises.
"No one has been injured in the incident. The services have now resumed and the situation is under control," added the official.
