A senior commando of Andhra Pradesh's elite anti-Maoist force Greyhounds was killed in an exchange of fire with Maoists on the Andhra-Odisha border on Monday, police said.

Over 20 Maoists, including some women, were killed in the gun battle in Malkangiri district of Odisha.

The incident occurred during a joint search operation in the forests by special forces of the two states.

"Two senior commandos of Greyhounds were injured in the exchange of fire. One of them, Abu Bakr, succumbed to his wounds before he could be airlifted to Visakhapatnam for treatment," police said.

Abu Bakr hailed from Gajuwaka area in Visakhapatnam. Deputy Inspector General of Police (Visakhapatnam range) Srikant visited the slain commando's house and consoled his family members.
