A Congress corporator has been shot dead in Uttar Pradesh, police said Tuesday.
The shooting took place late Monday in Deoria when Mihirkant Mishra was on his way to the tehsil town. Six unidentified assailants, who were hiding behind some bushes, fired at him, police said.
Mishra was rushed to a hospital where he died after preliminary treatment.
Mishra's father has alleged that he was killed for opposing gambling and illegal liquor vends in some villages.
Senior police officials rushed to the spot and pacified angry relatives and supporters of the corporator.
Police are probing the case.
