As the Congress on Thursday accused the Election Commission of becoming a "captive puppet" in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's hands, the BJP hit back and said the opposition party was "known for breaking guidelines on constitutional bodies".

The Congress had dubbed the Election Commission a captive puppet and accused Modi of brazenly breaking rules in a final bid to save the Bharatiya Janata Party's "sinking ship" in Gujarat.

BJP leader Bhupendra Yadav said: "After the last Rajya Sabha elections in Gujarat, we had accepted its decision then. The Congress had then called the Election Commission impartial."

"And now, when the Congress is set to face defeat, they are making all sort of allegations against the election panel," the BJP MP told the media here.

He said the Congress was known for "keeping others as puppets".

"I would say it is a case of sour grapes that they are now blaming constitutional bodies," Yadav said.

The BJP leader's remarks came soon after Congress leader Randeep Surjewala hurled accusations at the poll panel.

The Congress also denounced Modi's 'roadshow' after voting in Ahmedabad on Thursday. This, it said, was "flagrant violation of the model code of conduct".
