The Congress on Friday accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of diluting the Narada sting operation issue by ordering a "farcical" probe into it.

"Having won the assembly polls, Mamata Banerjee has done a volte face on the issue. She wants to establish that electoral victory legitimises the misdeeds by her party leaders," said state Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

Describing as a "conspiracy" the sting operation in which several high profile Trinamool Congress leaders were allegedly caught taking wads of currency notes, Banerjee on Friday ordered a probe headed by city Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar.

Pointing fingers at the top cop, Chowdhury questioned Banerjee's decision of going for a probe by the city police instead of any central investigating agency.

"They only have alleged that money foreign money was used in the sting operation, so how can the city police investigate such a matter. Why didn't she request for a probe by the Enforcement Directorate or CBI, if she really wanted to truth to be revealed.

"She wants to shield her men and that is why she has chosen the person who helped in covering up the probe in the Saradha chit fund scam.

"This farcical probe is nothing but her attempt to pour water on the sting issue and dilute it," said Chowdhury.

He also slammed the Banerjee government over the rising prices and political violence in the state and said the party will take out a protest march in the city on June 25.

Chowdhury said Communist Party of India-Marxist state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra has been invited to participate in the march.
