The simmering anger against the Gujarat Congress leadership exploded on Thursday with senior leader and spokesperson Shaktisinh Gohil giving up responsibilities for the 2017 assembly polls, days after a former MP resigned from the core committee.
First on his Facebook handle and later in a letter to state Congress President Bharatsinh Solanki, Gohil refused to accept the charge of selection of party candidates in 27 constituencies in the Saurashtra and Kutch regions.
"I believe that according to the tradition, this responsibility is carried out under the leadership of the state party president and Leader of the Opposition. I think it will be better and welcome if this practice continues," Gohil, an MLA from Abdasa in Kutch district, asserted.
He added: "I would like to offer my honest and dedicated services to the party as its worker but would I like to request you to accept my resignation from the special responsibility entrusted in me."
Gohil's resignation comes soon after senior party leaders and formes MPs Jagdish Thakor and Kuvanrji Bavalia similarly raised objections against Solanki's decision to hand over responsibility to a section of party leaders.
