Congress president Sonia Gandhi Sunday accepted the poll verdict in Haryana and Maharashtra where the party bowed out of power after two and three consecutive terms, respectively, and reiterated her party's resolve to play a "constructive and vigilant" role.

"The people of Maharashtra and Haryana trusted us with their mandate thrice and twice, respectively. We hope that the parties forming the government will fulfill the promises that they made," Gandhi said in a statement issued by her office.

"We thank our supporters and voters for having stood by us, and our workers for their tireless and unstinting commitment to the party and its ideology," she said.

In the vote-count Sunday, the BJP secured majority in the 90-member Haryana assembly and was hovering at leads/victories on around 120 seats in Maharashtra, thus emerging as the single-largest party but falling short of the crucial figure of 145 in the 288-seat house.
