The coordinating committee (corcom) of six proscribed underground organisations has claimed responsibility for ambushing a patrol party of 29 Assam Rifles near Hengshi village in Chandel district of Manipur on May 22.

In a three-page statement, Corcom media coordinator K. Yonheiba said the ambush was carried out by a combined force under the supervision of the joint military council of corcom. He said the fighters who carried out the military operation, code named Yening, successfully returned to the camp.

"Six personnel of the 29 Assam Rifles were killed on the spot and seven others seriously wounded. Besides, one light machine gun, one INSAS rifle and four AK-56 rifles were seized," he said.

Yonheiba denied as baseless media reports on an encounter between insurgents and army troops on Wednesday on the state's border with Myanmar.

Corcom was formed on October 5, 2012, by Kangleipak Communist Party, Kanglei Yawol Kunna Lup, People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak, People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Progressive), Revolutionary People's Front, United National Liberation Front and United Peoples Party of Kangleipak.

The last group was expelled from corcom in February 2013.
