A woman detained on the charge of abducting a newborn from a government-run hospital here was arrested along with her husband on Wednesday, police said. The couple has been remanded in police custody for 10 days.
"Chinmoyee Beij and her husband Prasanta Beij who were detained on Tuesday night from Bagmari region in Kolkata's Maniktala have been arrested and charged with trafficking and criminal conspiracy," Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Vishal Gurg said.
The couple will remain in police custody till March 24 for interrogation.
According to police, while the woman was directly involved in abducting the child, her husband was arrested for abetting and hiding the kid.
The baby boy of Saraswati Naskar, who was admitted in the maternity ward in Kolkata Medical College and Hospital, was taken away by a woman clad in a green sari on the pretext of a check-up around 12.30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Within hours, police released a closed-circuit television footage of the suspect carrying a baby inside a Metro station. The footage was repeatedly aired on television channels and shared on the social media.
Around 9 p.m., Bagmari area residents found that a woman living in the locality resembled the suspect and recovered the baby from her house.
When the baby was taken to the Kolkata Medical College and Hospital, Naskar and her husband identified him as their offspring.
